Bonita Canyon: The crew trecks onward through the canyon after a long rest at Bonita Cow Camp.
Thursday, June 28
As we reached Bonita Creek, our goal of a two o'clock arrival seemed more and more possible. Then, the trail seemed to disappear as we reached Bonita cow camp. The staff had gone out for a ride, so we all dropped our packs and sent off a few scouts to go looking for the trail. We soon found something that looked promising, but decided to eat lunch and consider our options before continuing. The crew voted to folow what we thought was the trail instead of taking the longer, more sure route of the road. We were all discouraged, as our one hour stop had put us significantly behind schedule. Furthermore, it soon became apparent that we in fact were following a path made by cattle, not one made by the dilligent Philmont trail crews. So, after a quick turn across the meadow, we rejoined the road, and walked on toward our destination.
