Beaubien: Part of our rest day at Beaubien consisted of a celebration of Shabbat (the Jewish sabbath) on Friday evening with a few Philmont staffers.

Thursday, June 28

Due to the long delay, we didn't reach Beaubien until 2:45, well later then our goal, but with still enough time to catch our scheduled horse ride, we figured. But as soon as we went up onto the shack porch to check in, our hopes were shattered as we were told that our horse ride had beeen scheduled for one. The crew was very disturbed, having missed the scheduled events three days running, but we got into camp and set up as usual. That night, dinner was very late due to some tempermental stoves, and there was again way too much food. Nothing seemed to go our way, as we didn't even manage to finish cleaning up in time to catch the first half of the campfire. Everyone was pretty down, but we were all encouraged by the realization that tomorrow was a layover day: no hiking, and plenty of time for hot showers, sleeping late (sort of), side hikes, and and horse rides.

Friday, June 29

Friday we all relaxed, taking advantage of our day off to check out some of Philmont's programs. Half of the group got up early and went on a side hike to trail peak to see the famed wreck of a World War II bomber, while the other half slept in a little later and went on the morning horse ride. This group finished significantly earlier, and so took their packs down to Phillips Junction to pick up the next days food ration. We all took the opportunity to take hot showers, some at the Junction, others back at Beaubien, and some of us even got to wash our clothers. We also took the opportunity of the day off to reflect on our trip so far, now almost half over. We came to the conclusion that as things were going, we were not getting to do enough program, and were in fact in danger of not making it to our conservation site in time. So we decided to request an itinerary change that would take us around Mt. Phillips instead of over it. That night we had services for the Jewish sabbath, finished dinner early, and enjoyed the campfire program. At advisors coffee that evening , we asked for the itinerary change, but it was turned down. That evening we stayed up pretty late talking about what we had to do to make better time, and decided that we had to get up at 5:30 for the rest of the trip, and resigned ourselves to cold breakfasts.
